Extremely short central CC single bonds of 1.445(3) and 1.440(2) Å were revealed in the two 1,1′-coupled bridged bicyclo[1.1.0]butane derivatives 1 and 2 by crystal structure analysis. The CC bond compression is ascribed to a considerable increase in the bond angles involving these bonds. The possible further shortening of the central CC bond in the extreme case of the hypothetical bitetrahedryl is also considered.
