In this work a fiber-optic thermometer is demonstrated, using the change in absorption characteristics of a doped glass plate as the principle of operation of the transducer. A novel reference channel, generated at the sensor element itself is used, based on the fluorescence induced in a piece of neodymium/glass. Operation from −60 to 200 °C is reported and the potential for higher temperature operation is discussed.
