A method for measuring directly the relaxation rates of both population and alignment using time-resolved infrared double resonance is presented. The results for CO in J approximately=10 show that the reorientation cross-section is about 50% of the cross-section for total inelasticity. A 20% contribution of elastic processes to the dephasing time T 2 can be estimated from comparison with pressure broadening data.
