SUMMARYSuperpure aluminium has been treated by a novel atmospheric pressure non-equilibrium plasma system to study the effect on wettability and associated surface carbon content. The water contact angle significantly decreases with exposure to the plasma; further, whilst the contact angle increases with ageing after plasma treatment, the recovery is only partial. XPS reveals a decrease in carbon content on the surface for plasma treatment for 30 seconds and beyond; recontamination by adventitious carbon is associated with ageing. However, after ageing, the surfaces have increased wettability compared with the original surfaces.
