Stretching the imagination: Based on simulations it is proposed that atom-manipulation techniques, such as atomic force microscopy (AFM), could be used to draw and manipulate monoatomic nanowires using thiolates anchored to gold clusters on surfaces (see picture, gold Au, yellow S). At the same time, the force-versus-extension curve is diagnostic for the isomerizations of the underlying covalently bound species.
