Calculated for a simplified model of the distorted magnetosphere, the electric field induced by the earth's rotation exhibits an azimuthal asymmetry somewhat similar to that of the magnetic field. Analytical tracing of the resultant field-line motion in the equatorial plane indicates that the magnetosphere does not rotate rigidly with the earth, although the time (one day) required for a complete rotation is the same for all field lines, as one might expect. The calculated analytical representation of the rotation-induced electric field, or some generalization thereof, may be of value to those interested in studying the flow of cold plasma in a model magnetosphere.
