Flash photolysis and time resolved mass spectrometry have been improved for combined application to fast gas phase reaction studies. Poisson statistics have been used to determine spectrometer sensitivity quantitatively, for a relative sensitivity of 10 -5 and an absolute value of 5 × 10 -8 mole l -1 . Nitrogen dioxide actinometry has provided the incident ultra-violet light flux (1 × 10 18 quanta/cm 2 per flash) for the geometrically coupled flash lamp and reaction vessel. Both bimolecular reactions and termolecular reactions can be studied with the improved apparatus. In addition, the flash-heated expansion of argon at constant pressure has been examined as a qualitative sensor of reaction temperature.
