A step-by-step procedure is outlined for the surgical treatment of chronic pancreatitis and its complications: If the operative cholangiogram demonstrates an unobstructed pancreatic duct filled by reflux, sphincterotomy is done. If no reflux occurs, an operative pancreatogram is essential after sphincterotomy. If the pancreatogram demonstrates obstruction due to stone or stricture or reveals a pseudocyst in continuity with the pancreatic duct system, the operations here described are carried out. The techniques can bemodified for the correction of chronic pancreatic fistulas.
