X-ray measurements of the thermal expansion of NaC1 up to the melting point are reported. Within experimental error, the expansion of the lattice agrees with the macroscopic dilatation, and it is shown that the number of lattice defects present at the melting point cannot be expected to cause a positively detectable difference between them.
