By determining the ratio of the acid‐ and neutral maltase activities of leucocytes it is possible to detect muscle acid maltase deficiency (Variant of glycogen storage disease Type II). It is not possible to detect the heterozygotes with this ratio. However, this can be done by analyzing the kinetics of the inhibition by turanose of the acid maltase in the leucocytes. Electrophoresis of leucocyte homogenates shows separation of two distinct bands from the starting position in controls but only one band in patients.
