A passive scalar convected by homogeneous axisymmetric turbulence is studied using the eddy-damped quasinormal Markovian (EDQNM) approximation to obtain a determinate set of equations for scalar-variance and turbulence energy spectra. The study is confined to a turbulent field in which cross correlations between the scalar and velocity fluctuations are zero, so that scalar flux is absent. Our broad objective is to study the effect of anisotropy of homogeneous axisymmetric turbulence and the subsequent return toward isotropy for a passive scalar field. In particular, the dependence of the scalar decay rate on the anisotropy strength of turbulence and the invariant III is examined. Numerical results are shown for cases where the initial Reynolds number with respect to the Taylor microscale is Rλ(t=0)=107 and the Prandtl number Pr=1.
