A method is described for estimating the energy dissipation rate, ε, from radar measurements of the structure parameter, C 2 n , in stably stratified layers of turbulence. This estimate applies to horizontal layers of turbulence whose thickness, L t , is less than the vertical resolution, 2Δ, of the radar ( L t , < 2Δ). Both ε within the turbulence layer and the average of ε over the radar volume, are determined. The derived expression for ε is based on a theoretical relation of turbulence layer thicknesses to the buoyancy length.
