Abstract: 14 C‐trimethoprim was administered to swine by intravenous injection. The concentration of trimethoprim in the plasma was determined by spectrophotometry, spectrofluorimetry and by liquid scintillation counting. There were only minor deviations between the spectrophotometric and the spectrofluori‐metric methods, as the metabolites which may interfere in the spectrophotometric analysis are formed only in very small amounts. More than 50 % of the administered dose was excreted in the urine within 5 hours. The total urinary excretion in 3 days was 75–80 % while only about 10 % was excreted in the faeces. Trimethoprim was extensively metabolized in swine. Less than 15 % of the dose was excreted unchanged in the urine.
