Primary Li / SOCl2 Cells: VII . Effect of and Electrolyte Salts on the Performance

The performance characteristics of Li / SOCl 2 hermetic D cells with Li 2 B 10 Cl 10 and Li 2 B 12 Cl 12 electrolyte salts were found to be quite comparable to the cells with LiAlCl 4 electrolyte salt when tested fresh. After storage at 72°C the cells with Li 2 B 10 Cl 10 salt showed improved voltage‐delay characteristics at −30°C. SEM studies showed the Li anode film to be relatively thin, porous and possibly mechanically weak, and consists of uniformly grown small crystals of LiCl .
