The proposed article is a kind of anti-compendium - a summae of problem fields related to determining the philosophical status of virtual reality. The need for such material is dictated by the semantic expansion of the named concept, the uncertainty of the denotation (or rather, the designation), and the rapid development of the IT industry, which led to a completely natural "profanation by everyday life" - that is, the interpretation of theoretical results by practical users. All these circumstances make it necessary to organize ideas about virtual reality, which, in turn, is impossible without considering the process of formation of the concept in its current form and functions.
