A general theory is presented for the evolution of a dispersive and weakly nonlinear wave packet in an inhomogeneous medium. It is shown that in one space dimension the wave packet is described by a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with variable coefficients, and by the appropriate generalization in a higher number of space dimensions.
