The origin of the quadrupole splitting observed in the Mossbauer spectra of α‐NaFeO 2 has been investigated using a point charge model. The magnit, ude of the electric field gradient (EFG) is very sensitive to the value of u, the distortion parameter of the anion sub‐lattice. These calculations combined with the experimental results are used to deduce information about the relative amount of distortion in this compound. The sign of the EFG is positive.
