A method derived from classical electropolishing in a cell is described. Two masks, each with a hole, cause preferential thinning of a sheet of metal between the holes. For aluminium the thinned portions reach several square millimetres in area. A simple electronic apparatus, which includes a light-emitting diode and a photodiode, instantly arrests polishing at a predetermined thinness.
