Three-dimensional (3D) displays offer the capability to generate lifelike stereoscopic imagery. A defining attribute differentiating 3D from conventional two-dimensional (2D) displays is image authenticity. In traditional 3D displays, the physical display device remains visible concurrently with the perceived 3D image. Consequently, the 3D image appears explicitly generated by the device rather than existing as an independent entity within 3D space. This diminished sense of authenticity significantly constrains the intrinsic value of 3D content. To mitigate this limitation, a hidden screen 3D display technique is proposed. This method leverages polarization principles to optically conceal the screen. It employs a transflective mirror combined with polarization phase modulation to generate the 3D image independently of the visible screen, achieving the hidden screen effect. The proposed display system achieves optical occlusion of the display device within an optimal viewing distance of 350.12 mm and a viewing angle of 42.79° Furthermore, it suppresses direct transmission of the display light source through the analyzer. Crucially, dual polarization state conversion optically decouples the display device from the 3D image within the optical path, realizing the hidden screen functionality. Simultaneously, the inherent transparency of the display assembly, integrated with the transflective mirror, allows the 3D image to blend seamlessly with the surrounding real-world environment. This integration substantially enhances the perceptual realism and immersion of the 3D imagery. The resulting 3D images, appearing detached from a discernible physical source, exhibit significantly higher authenticity. This approach provides an effective solution for applications in naked-eye augmented reality.
