Some of the published evidence used in the synthesis and maintenance model of plant respiration is discussed in relation to the effect of temperature. Recalculations from the data of de Vries (1975 b) give different results from those claimed by him. The model is considered in terms of the use of substrate in the dark and its production in the light. It is suggested that starvation estimates of maintenance are not valid. The most reliable method of observing synthesis respiration in whole plants appears to be by following a discrete pool of substrate, as is possible with labelled carbon.
