Two β-lactamase inhibitors, clavulanic acid and CP-45, 899 were compared in vitro. Against a wide range of Gram-negative and positive organisms both compounds, when combined with a β-lactam antibiotic (penicillin, ampicillin or carbenicillin), were highly effective in reducing the MIC of the β-lactam drug to within the therapeutic range for the majority of β-lactamase producing strains. Clavulanic acid would appear to be a more potent β-lactamase inhibitor than CP-45, 899 against the majority of organisms tested, although some strains showed greater potentiation with CP-45, 899.
