The way in which insects respond to high temperature is more or less known. For instance, we know that higher temperatures increase the rate of develoI)nlent of insects and favor the formation of pigments, so that southem varieties of butterflies, with l)righter colors, can be artificially produced. It is known also that high temperatures cause dial)auses in some insects; for examl)le, estimation may l)e ol)served in the caterpillars of L oxostege sticicalis in the steppes of the Lower Volga region. Excessively high temperatures kill insects thus, cocoons of the frit-fly are killed l)y a tellm)erature of 350 C.
