It appears to have been first discussed by Osler in 1892 under the designation of acute afebrile polyneuritis. Mills mentioned it in 1898 at the time the neuron theory was adopted. In 1916 Patrick noted the occurrence of facial diplegia in the syndrome of polyneuritis.
