Wherever shocks are observed or inferred to exist in the tenuous plasma of the solar corona and interplanetary space, energetic charged particles are observed or inferred to exist as well. Shocks can apparently both efficiently accelerate particles and affect their subsequent transport. The last four years have witnessed an explosive growth in research concerned withunderstanding this close association between energetic particles (cosmic rays) and shocks within the heliosphere. It is the purpose of this literature survey to chart the major observational and theoretical developments of this growth, assess our current understanding, and hopefully provide an outlook for future work.
