It is demonstrated that for an optical pulse propagating along an optical fiber the rms pulse width varies parabolically with distance, irrespective of initial pulse form and frequency chirp variation. Furthermore, the result is true to arbitrary dispersive order and should prove a very useful tool in determining the information-carrying capability of long-distance optical-fiber transmission systems.
