Various methods of optimization have been applied in the past few years to the minimum weight design of different structures such as trusses, frames, or built-up wings (3,4, 15). Because the finite element method is general enough to handle any type of structure, finite element based optimization codes (1, 17, 18) have the added attraction of generality.
