Surface analysis can now be applied on the microscopical level using a number of instrumental analytical techniques. A review is given of the field of air pollution and a brief description is presented of a number of examples from our laboratory practice concerned with the characterization of air particulates and emission samples or the surface characterization of pure and modified asbestos fibres.
