Abstract o-Quinonemethides were prepared by treating o-[1-(alkylthio)alkyl]phenols with a Lewis acid. The Diels–Alder reaction of the resulting o-quinonemethides was also catalyzed by the Lewis acid. Hexahydrocanna-binol was synthesized according to this method.
