The imposition of abnormal stresses by culturing tissue explants in a bent configuration produces changes in the rate of cell accumulation and in the plane of cell division. The relief of stress by imposing a preliminary period of plasmolysis before culture produces a similar effect. A hypothesis is advanced to explain how the directions of stress may determine the subsequent plane of division.
