S ummary The fine structure of the digestive glands of Dionaea muscipula is described and the changes that occur in the cells following stimulation were examined quantitatively. Significant cyclic alterations were found in the volume of the vacuole and of the labyrinthine walls. The architecture of these walls was examined in detail. The mitochondria were shown to become considerably more condensed and often to adopt elongated profiles. The endoplasmic reticulum showed a decrease in area, but appeared to change from a storing to a synthetic role, acquiring numerous polysomes. These obSérvations are discussed in terms of the function of the gland.
