A time delay resulting from the reflection of a pulse from a frequency-dependent boundary impedance is computed and its effect on the measurement of ultrasonic group velocities is demonstrated experimentally. The time delay adds to the transit time of the pulse in the medium and its frequency dependence leads to an apparent dispersion of the group velocity.
