Abstract 24‐Methylenecholesterol was positively identified as an intermediate in the dealkylation and the conversion of campesterol to cholesterol in the tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta (L.). Biochemical and nutritional studies with 3 H‐labeled campesterol and 24‐methyl‐enecholesterol indicated that the conversion of campesterol to cholesterol in this insect includes the following metabolic sequence: campesterol, 24‐methylene‐cholesterol, desmosterol, cholesterol.
