Based on realistic velocity distributions, analytic solutions of monotonic double layers which essentially agree with observations are obtained. A universal constant is found which relates potential drop, free ion energy, and trapped ion temperature in a simple manner. The Bohm criterion and the scaling law for the width of strong double layers are confirmed analytically.
