An analysis is presented of the thermal stresses in partially absorbing ceramics, in the form of flat plates symmetrically heated by thermal radiation and cooled by convection. The absorption coefficient is introduced as a material property, which affects thermal stress resistance. For zero heat transfer coefficient and optical thickness μa→0 the tensile thermal stresses are proportional to (μa) 3 . For h =∞ and μa→0, the tensile thermal stresses are a linear function of μa. Appropriate thermal stress resistance parameters were derived.
