A W/Fu rat antiserum to a syngeneic Gross virus-induced tumor had cytotoxic reactivity with Gross tumors and also with tumors induced by Moloney and Rauscher viruses and with some plasma cell tumors. Analysis of these reactions by absorption studies indicated that the antiserum contained 3 antibodies to different cell surface antigens. One antigen had the same specificity as that detected by a mouse anti-Gross serum. A second antigen was found on tumors induced by Gross, Moloney, and Rauscher viruses and on most plasma cell tumors. The third antigen appeared identical to the recently described alloantigen, GIX. The implications of the complex antigenicity of virus-induced tumors are discussed.
