The work function Φ of evaporated films of sodium chloride and the energy gap δ from the filled levels to the Fermi level have been determined by photoelectric measurements using the complete electrode substitution method. The values found are Φ = 5.12(3) ± 0.018 ev and δ = 1.55(0) ± 0.034 ev.
