The Berg‐Barrett X‐ray diffraction contrast technique has been applied to searching for dislocations within a vapor condensed zinc crystal platelet and, also, to studying the crystal surface topography. Correlation of the X‐ray results with results from optical metallography and interferometry showed: (1) a few dislocations were present, at least, in several local regions of the crystal; and, (2) very shallow surface steps (≈2 × 10 −5 cm) produced observable contrast in the X‐ray micrographs.
