author describes the revitalization of small towns in China since the late 1970s and the ensuing increases in employment and in capital for rural development. The purpose of this article is to examine the effect of this transformation on rapid urbanization and to discuss problems and prospects of small towns as designated growth poles in the urban geography of China. importance of government policies supporting the growth of small towns is stressed.
