Secondhand bookstores have many virtues, not the least of which is the chance of finding a presentation copy or one with some other personal memorabilia which lets one share belatedly the festive circumstances under which it was given. When one finds a book inscribed by a son to a father or a father to a son, one may enjoy by proxy the flavor of the family reunion. Of course, another portion of book collecting or bookmanship which many people enjoy so much is simply to point with pride to a ravishingly rare edition which was picked up on the back shelf of somebody's corset shop or in a Paris bookstall.
