The superconducting transition temperature (Tc) is theoretically shown to rise as a result of the presence of the Peierls instability within a simple incomplete-nesting model in two dimensions. It is demonstrated that Tc can exceed by an order of magnitude that in the absence of the Peierls transition under certain conditions. The implication of this is discussed for the high-Tc superconductors La_2-x{M}ₓCuO₄.
