An investigation of an electrostatic field desorption source of atomic deuterium ions for neutron generators is presented. The source is shown to produce deuteron ions in pulse durations as short as 20ns. This ion source has the potential to facilitate the development of long-life portable neutron generators with neutron outputs scalable from ∼107n∕s to greater than 1010n∕s for active neutron interrogation systems.
