SULLIVAN et al. (1965) and Whitmore et al. (1966, 1967) reported that 1,2-dimethyl-5-nitroimidazole (dimetridazole), p-ureidobenzenearsonic acid (p-UBAA) and 4-nitrophenylarsonic acid (4-NPAA) were effective in reducing mortality from histomoniasis when turkeys were artificially infected with the causative organism. Three experiments were conducted in the present study to evaluate the prophylactic efficacy of 1-methyl-2-carbamoyloxymethyl - 5 - nitro - imidazole (ronidazole) against histomoniasis. Different levels of ronidazole were compared to dimetridazole (experiments 1, 2 and 3), p-UBAA (experiments 2 and 3) and 4-NPAA (experiment 3). EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Turkeys were fed the same diet in electrically heated battery brooders on raised wire floors until they were approximately four weeks of age. Both Broad Breasted Bronze and Broad Breasted White poults were used. All drug levels (Table 1) were added to a 28 percent protein, practical-type, corn-soybean meal diet. Eight male and eight female turkeys four weeks of age were randomly assigned to each . . .
