In a survey of congenital defects in Dublin (Coffey and Jessop, 1955), it was noted that the predominant abnormality was anencephaly, which accounted for 29 * 5 per cent. of all major abnormal births. It also appeared that there were certain peculiarities regard- ing the distribution of this abnormality in the city. It was felt, therefore, that a more detailed inquiry into this condition would be of interest.
