Silica monoliths were synthesized by application of an ethylene glycol-modified phenylene-bridged silane precursor to a nonionic block copolymer as template, followed by supercritical-fluid extraction of the polymer and pore fluid. The procedure allows a hierarchical buildup of macroscopic shape, uniform macropores, highly ordered mesopores (and micropores), and molecular periodicity of phenylene moieties within the pore walls (see TEM image).
