The assumptions made in the theory of thermal diffusion columns are noted. A transport-theoretical analysis is made of these assumptions, and it is found that the errors introduced by the assumptions can be corrected for, so that a quantitative theoretical evaluation of the performance of a thermal column can be made. Results are shown for He, Ne, Ar, Kr, O/sub 2/, H/sub 2/, and CH/sub 4/ as examples. (T.F.H.)
