Nowadays almost any engineering artefact can be made from almost any starting material – a ferromagnet from a plastic, a superconductor from a ceramic, a spring from Portland cement. This dramatic change has arisen from our understanding of the microstructure of solid materials and of the properties of defects in the solid state.
