In this lecture the case is made for the investigation of various beams of heavily ionizing radiations with a view to their eventual use in radiotherapy. Beams of heavy ions and stopping π - mesons are considered, and the probable oxygen enhancement ratio and distribution of dose with depth are compared with 60 Co γ rays and other beams in current use. Beams of stopping π - mesons give an excellent distribution of dose with depth, and a very favourable oxygen enhancement ratio. The feasibility of preliminary experiments with biological material is considered.
