We examine the conditions under which the boundary layer between an accretion disc and white dwarf can emit hard X-rays with particular application to the observations of X-rays from dwarf novae. We argue that for low accretion rates |(\,10¹⁶g\,s⁻¹⁾| hard X-ray emission is possible with temperatures up to |~ 2× 10⁸K|. For higher accretion rates, hard X-ray emission is suppressed, and most of the radiation is emitted as soft X-rays with temperature |~ 2-5× 10⁵K|.
