The recently established National Depression Care Training Centre (NDCTC) commissioned a survey to establish the training needs of practice nurses nationwide. A questionnaire was sent to 3000 nurses who had attended National Asthma and Respiratory Training Centre courses in the last 10 years. The response rate was 30% (1006) and revealed that the majority of respondents felt they did not have enough knowledge of diagnosing and treating depression. Even among those who had attended courses confidence in dealing with depression was very low. In order to begin to tackle this situation, NDCTC has designed a 2-day pilot course which will be held initially at Nene College Northampton. This is an introductory course and developments will follow.
