By laser selective excitation of the 3s3p 1 P 1 0 level of Mg I the Rydberg series 3s3p 1 P 1 0 -3snd 1 D 2 has been recorded in absorption up to n=24, showing strong perturbation by the 3p 2 1 D 2 term. The 3s3p 1 P 1 0 -3p 21 S 0 autoionizing transition has been located at lambda 300-9 nm.
